Gen 5 did that pseudo 3d stuff that wasn't awful, but on such a small screen it lead to really obvious aliasing and bad looking motion in some parts.
Gen 4 looked good, consistent and had great music. They focused on a lot of environmental things in their gameplay, like the snow and the swamps, and the areas with constant rainfall. The thing about design is that it's easy to notice when it's bad, but hard to explain when it's good. I'm no expert.
For your next assignment class, every time you post a pic in a comfy thread, you have to try to point out good elements of design in the pokemon series that lends itself to 'comfy'.
