In summer of 2003, my lower middle class parents saved up to take the family on a summer trip to Disney World. Pokemon Gen 3 just came out and my parents knew Crystal hadn't left my GBA once in the 2-3 years I had owned it, so I get Sapphire as a "birthday gift" (birthday is in the middle of Summer, so the trip coincided) and my little brother gets Ruby. Spend days getting lost in the magic of Disney World with my family, nights in our hotel watching fireworks, going on an adventure in Hoenn, and trading pokemon with my little bro.
That's one of the best memories I have of my childhood and typing this out has me choked up at work thinking about how much I love my parents and how much they sacrificed for me and my siblings.
That summer is probably why I still love pokemon so much and associate the series with feelings of joy and nostalgia.
