Notice how XY is following AG's example with a quartet, rather than a trio, and notice how effective it's been? I'm positive these writers had a hand at AG back then.

Not to mention, although May left for Johto, she did so with a heavy heart, since she realized that being with Ash, just isn't good for her as a Coordinator. The sub elaborates on this with Brock and Scott's asides after the Kanto Grand Festival.
