Reality is Nintendo codified the schedule, by asking GF for the sequel and getting bugfix, graphically improved upper versions until GF had GS ready for launch. Nintendo then ordered the sequel to GS for THREE years from date and asked for a filler game to sell in the inbetween (by that time, merch/tcg/anime/manga/etc were all up and running, it took until Iwata took over as President of Nintendo for TPC to be formed, to start handling everything but the GF games). People just won't admit however the whole set-up is an agreement GF and Nintendo WILLINGLY enter - GF adore kids playing their games and getting introduced to their world and Nintendo loves money. Everyone wins.
