I think that the region is pretty boring and doesn't have much replay value. There isn't enough variation in environment and it gets stale pretty fast for me. I also find the pokemon to be the most lackluster of the entire pokedex. Far too many of them are just real animals with very slight tweaks (Persian is just a cat, Ponyta is just a pony, Raticate is just a rat, Pidgey is just a bird), then the ones that they took more creative liberties with are just ugly (Mr. Mime, Jynx, Hitmonchan, Machamp). The evolutions are also some of the most uncreative (Magnemite -> Three Magnemite, Poliwhirl -> Angry Poliwhirl, Grimer -> Angry Grimer). There are a good amount of them that I do like, even if I still find a lot of those pretty plain, but Kanto has the highest dislike to like ratio of all the regions for me. And finally, there's no real plot, Team Rocket is boring and unchallenging. Even the final fight with Giovanni proved no trouble for me as a kid, I really wish there were more a plot with more exploration into Giovanni and his motives.
I guess that's about it. Boringest region, boringest evil team, boringest pokemon. I will forever think of gen I as the "Prototype Region" because it seems like they were just testing the waters and waiting until they were sure it'd be popular to let out their real creativity.
And to drive the point home, have you ever noticed that in "Say one thing you like about your least favorite gen" threads, the only thing people can say about gen I as their least favorite is "It started it all". So basically, we wouldn't have all this good shit without first going through the shitty shit.
