Charizard is too cocky and arrogant, just like Red's rival.
Blastoise is just there as it doesn't resemble neither Red or Blue personality. even in the manga, it wasn't shown being to communicate well with Green.
Perhaps the original idea was to start with Bulbasaur but it was changed to three starters?
