I watched the anime first. It had me wanting to play the games.
Where do I start? My mom bought Pokemon Blue but my brother ended up playing it (I bumped the cartridge on accident and he flipped when the save file was gone) and eventually I had my very own Pokemon Yellow and beat that version. Being the dumb kid I was back in the day I eventually traded the majority of my video games when trade-in stores was a new thing.
I skipped the second generation for some reason, probably because I cried for Pokemon Gold when I found it at an import store. (God I already regret typing this.) Being the ADD child who can't even focus on reading English, I just played Gold until the 2nd gym and quit there. Lost the cartridge on moving day unfortunately. I got myself Pokemon Emerald but stopped at the 3rd gym.
Around 4th generation I bought Pokemon Pearl, Platinum, and HeartGold. I couldn't bear the sluggish pacing in Pearl, and I stopped again in Platinum by the 4th gym. This may sound really stupid but I actually get annoyed with trainer battles that drag on early game. and I don't know why the halfway gyms were my wall. HeartGold was the 2nd Pokemon game I've ever beaten and I loved how I got a second chance to explore Johto.
I was really disappointed with Pokemon White by the 5th generation with the whole adventure feeling like Trainer Battles: The Game. With Unova-only Pokemon I felt like it wasn't what I loved. I sold all of my 4th and 5th Pokemon games (kept my 3rd gen) thinking I have moved on from Pokemon.
Then Pokemon Y pretty much dragged me back into relapsing once everyone and their Pokemon had a copy. With EV training now encouraged by Game Freak via Super Training, I started understanding the games's mechanics a lot better than before and I began to appreciate the games more. It was this very reason why I decided to buy White 2 when it became on sale. I also Pokemon Diamond and SoulSilver and am still working on progress. Just when I thought I saw it all.
