His entire gimmick was strategizing using real game mechanics, which involved doing background research on his opponents to form strategies against them, which some people may have interpreted as "stalker".
Which is why he should have been the one to beat Ash and then beat Tobias. He could have showcased real strategy against legendaries and demonstrate that even shitmons can beat legends with the right strategy, just like in the games.Of course, against Ash it didn't matter since Ash would just plot armor his way through, but whoever was responsible for writing him seemed to care much more than any other writer about proper pokemon battles.
