"Competitive Pokemon" is retarded, and the whole e-sports scene that's sprung up around it is one of the biggest culprits behind the main series' stagnation. I've literally had people tell me with a straight face that it's okay for these RPGs to have terrible single-player campaigns because the autistic breeding system and online battling are all that matter.
Pokemon fans who look down on other RPGs for having recolors, but go crazy for regional forms or waste hours of their lives on shiny hunting, are massive hypocrites. Just because they don't have arbitrary numbers next to them in the Pokedex doesn't change the fact that they're still recolors/variations that took development time to implement.
I like Digimon's simple type system and complex evolutions more than Pokemon's complex type system and simple evolutions. The former approach gives the designers more artistic freedom since there's not 18 different elemental properties that must be partially represented in every single new monster. It also means your favorite monster is a lot less likely to be stuck with an unappealing evolution you don't like because you have options.
