It still suffers from what OP is describing + too linear but at least it has memorable cities and locations.
In comparision NOBODY ever talks about kalo, alola, galar and paldea except to complain about them

Sure if you ask someone they will tell you they enjoyed such and such place (like Area zero) but they will never spontaneously praise the region or talk about it landmarks and towns

That's why there is so much coomtalks nowadays. The new pokemon games are barren

Hoenn is masterfully crafted. Even the obligatory snow area was done well in a way that makes it memorable while keeping the tropical theme

the RS ice cave tileset is interesting because you can really see how it resembles the GBC graphics. everywhere else in the game, the bright colors make the GBA look so next-gen but here the illusion kind of falls off because of the flat palette. rustboro tunnel is another place you can see this.

the colors of the GBA games really elevate them, it's such a timeless art style that feels less aged now than RBY did back then. it's funny because in some tilesets like pic rel or Rusturf Tunnel that are still limited in palette, you can see it resembles GSC a lot more.
