Nariya is native to Okinawa in Japan, it's found elsewhere, but it's called Nariya because it's found in Nariya, Okinawa.
Since Okinawan is technically a different language, the name is in katakana instead of hiragana.
Notably, it can also be found being cultivated in Hawaii under the name Arundina graminifolia or Bamboo Orchids for use as a decorative plant.
