serenas romance was forcefully injected into the story, its unnatural it does not feel right. the viewer does not see her develop it thought out the series, instead we are just supposed to imagine or believe that it was always like this if serena developed the crush thought xy it would have been better but instead shitty writing and plot gave us the cringe childhood meet.
we see Ash and Dawn develop a very close connection(and maybe more depending on who you ask) through the entire DP series in the second half of DP they are inseparable and always shown together. there is no better option for romance for Ash than Dawn and I think that the writers know this considering what we saw recently (the retcon)
