Like the whole point of the first episode is to show that’s he’s in over his head and rushing blindly into fights without understanding what’s going on, he’ll, he doesn’t even want to become a good trainee or champion, he just wants to catch Pokemon.
It’s literally the Luke Skywalker approach, have the character start off as a reckless dweeb who learns how to become a badass. It’s storytelling 101.
