The Masters 8 has really shown all the champions in a new light. Just a bunch of shitters who don't even reach the knees of Leon in power level. Maybe Champions have always been weak if we think about it. Hell, Paul was making Ash sweat which implies Paul could very well be Champion level and he wasn't even using an optimal team against him.
