I'm fine with Pikachu beating Eternatus. He already defeated 5 pseudo legendaries (2 of them in the same battle) and 4 legendaries (Regice, Latios, Sivally and Tapu Koku) and Ash has been using him for 25 years, so it's not that much of a stretch to think he can beat Eternatus

Not like types actually matter in the show other than (usually) immunities. Seems like they choose movesets based off what might look cool in animation. They probably thought Garchomp would look silly burrowing through the ground or something.

If they wanted a projectile attack for Garchomp aside from Draco Meteor they probably could've used Scorching Sands over Scale Shot though.

The moment Leon sends out Eternatus, he is done. He'll either be known as the shitter who had to use a full blown legendary to beat Ash (when others used sub or mythicals), or the shitter who couldn't even beat Ash with a Rayquaza/Giratina/Kyurem/Zygarde/Necrozma level Pokemon.

We're in a weird spot right now. Ash certainly didn't have plot armor for 6 gens. In fact you can say he had literally the opposite of plot armor especially with the Sinnoh and Kalos leagues. After the fan spergout of XY though, it's hard to say. JN's ending will decide if the Alola win was just a fluke or that the fanbase genuinely scared the writers into giving Ash plot armor now.

1) Ash never defeated Mega Chomp, but he will defeat GMax Zard and maybe even Eternatus as well. Showing that Cynthia was a bigger challenge.
