In ORAS they elected to ban wynaut, gothorita, and poor little hoopa.
But failed to ban truly centralizing/broken/uber-lite sableye, metagross, or clefable.
Then in SM when dugtrio's attack stat got buffed by +20, they not only banned dugtrio, but also use the opportunity to ban diglet and trapinch as well, and not only from gen 7, but they also went back to ban them retroactively from gen 4, 5, & 6 too.
Of course, gen 8 started off with wynaut + gothorita + diglet + trapinch bans. They wouldn't even consider suspecting legitimately broken shit like Dracovish until they were finished banning NFEs.
I think it's because the old guard started leaving smogon in XY, newfags started rising to positions of power, and as pokemonshowdown became THE simulator, smogon had obtained a monopoly they hadn't had previously, there was no longer any competition of any kind, so they were content to sit in their hugbox echochamber and could totally ignore criticism. Smoggies don't deserve zarel.
I miss gen 5 desu.
