They were barren in Pokemon games until about gen V, and there wasn't a playable black protag till gen VI.
I remember almost 10 years ago when I was messing around with SSBB texture hacks and put this mod on Ness that made him look like Will Smith from the opening of Fresh Prince, black skin, shirt with yellow+green stripes. It was a joke skin, but it really had me thinking how cool it would be if you played Earthbound as a black kid. That's all the art posted ITT really is, "what if" stuff.
