And you're severely downplaying the secondary effect of the moves. They range through almost every type of weather and terrain and even severe stat downs. The blocking part is just so you have an answer to counter other player Max Moves.
And since any pokemon can do it without a setup, that means if a key part of your team falls, you still have the chance to use the max on another member of your team to recover some ground.
