Gen VII is just a huge disappointment for me. Everything superficial about it was fantastic- I think it has the most consistently good stable of Pokemon designs of any generation, the character designs are great, the region is really comfy and unique, and I loved the concept of Ultra Beasts. But the games themselves are just obnoxious to play. Routes and "dungeons" were palpable in their lack of any effort at all, you get stopped constantly, and Z-Moves were easily the worst generational gimmick of all. Then Ultra Sun/Moon came out and barely fixed anything while actually making the story significantly worse. There were games like XY and Sword/Shield that I could just write off as being crap, but the Gen 7 games make me think "Man, that really could have been something special but they fucked it up."
