How about adding the Sevii Islands, or locations from the anime? Or even Johto, if that's not too much work. (You could reuse the blk files from pokecrystal.) Show how Red (or Green/Leaf) got to Mt. Silver.
New NPCs would also be nice. The Team Rocket Executives from HG/SS, the female protagonist from FR/LG, Eusine (he lives in Celadon City), anime references (I mean the kind of thing Yellow did, like the people who give you all the starters)...
Also, I agree about Gen 1 (and Gen 2) being "comfier", but Gen 1 had a bunch of battle engine glitches and unbalanced weirdness that you could fix. (Like, does *anyone* miss the 1/256 miss chance for all moves, or Focus Energy doing the opposite of what it says?)
