They also solve mysteries and use computers but that doesn't stop them from being someone's pet and they could be argued as to being more human-like in personality and intelligence than Pokémon. As alluded earlier the anime still has pet imagery attached to the Pokémon like the type of food they eat precisely because the series wants to drill into your head that a Pokémon is a pet like Oak said over 20 years ago.
