The problem with him is one that I believe Garchomp shares as well is that they when they go in they can't really back away from a fight. They're 100% in and if your team doesn't back you or if extra help comes for you enemy you die. Another issue that Aegislash has is that he can only equip 3 items but so many items are really good on him. In fact some items completely change how you can play him and what he is capable of doing. I know that sounds kind of dumb but here's an an example. I could be off as I haven't actually tested this but just something I've happened to notice, it's hard not to notice things when you have a vision like mine, but let's say you have 2 identical Aegislash players and one had a muscle band and one does not. The one with Muscle Band can shred pretty much any objective to 50% hp instantly with a full stack of boosteds while one without can only do about 30%. That's a pretty big difference for having or not having a single item. There's a bunch of other things like that but maybe not clearly seen or large of an effect
Anyway here are the items I like best with him. I change them depending on if I'm expected to lane or forced into jungle with him and if I feel like being tankier or not.
>muscle band(must have if forced into jungle or you need more damage to shred objectives, if you have a ray ripper such as Duralodon or something you maybe don't actually need this)>attack weight (sword has pretty large ratios/scaling)>weakness policy(bigger shields)>focus band/cookie(having any extra health to allow you to live to your next wide guard is huge) >buddy barrier(this one is good simply because you are most vulnerable while in sword form which your unite forces you in
