Gen 5's Elite 4 sequence was a genuine shakeup from the fomrula that ended in not one, but two climactic "champion" battles. Letting you heal and access your box makes sense in the context that you have another guantlet to deal with after the E4, and the fight with Reshiram v Zerom is also balanced since the two are so evenly matched, meaning it's better that the two kill each other so you have to lean on your actual team for Ghetsis.
Speaking of Dennis, his Hydregion is so stupidly powerful that he one of the hardest battles in the franchise. All of this is a far cry from "you can't take on the first gym leader unless you have a Pokemon with x4 type advantage in your party".
I get what you're trying to do, but these two examples are wildly different. Pokemon was always casual, but LGPE takes it to a level where the game can basically play itself.
