I ain't gonna lie, it started in Gen IV, when they introduced all those retarded-looking evolutions for otherwise awesome old 'mons. Case in point is pic related, which took the 100.0% awesome Lickitung and turned it into this hideous baby ball.
Every generation since then has introduced a few good designs - Audino, Amaura, Type: Null, Frosmoth - but at the cost that the average design is getting worse and worse - think of Seismitoad, Pancham, Crabrawler, and Blipbug. It's just not worth it at this point to have to put up with demented cartoon goofballs just to have a couple of new friendos.
Admittedly, I don't think we can all agree on *which* new mons are the demented goofballs. Lots of people don't like my boy Null, and I think Darmanitan is hideous despite that it has a fair number of fans. I kinda feel like there should be a greater variety of 'mon series out there to appeal to different kinds of people - the ones who like overdesigned legendaries, the ones who like weird objectmons, et cetera - so none of us have to put up with anything we don't like.
