It makes some sense pre-DVD when those animations may be the only animated material from that IP that you could actually buy, but in 2017? Pokemon is a perpetual franchise and that material is available to go back to, I don't think it makes sense. Presuming the movie remained standalone you would get a short, unsatisfying little return that ends as soon as it really begins. (But then why make it a throwback to start with? Good question!)
