Generally competitive games that have a large amount of characters (Smash, Street Fighter, LoL, and so on) require you to unlock characters, and generally it's not hard to unlock them, you just have play. Unlike those, Pokémon forces you to do a shitload of timey and RGN-based stuff just to breed a single Pokémon for testing purposes.
