I wouldn't call it a cash grab seeing how incompetent game freak can be. I do think of them as the definitive Kanto experience considering it's literally just kanto. Also they could have made the games be a follow up to SM/USUM if they wanted with how those games ended. They even gave us a character from those games so they did feel connected. That's why I believe Red and Blue are the same since all these games are gen 7

I imagine it's due a variety of reasons
>1) Pokémon is mainly a franchise aimed towards kids, having references from games from even 5 years ago is pointless if your target demographic is 7 years old
>2) Some cameos create more contradictions than others (like Wally still being a kid in SM while Red and Blue are adults despite the fact that Gen 3 was supposed to take place alongside Gen 1, Cynthia hasn't aged a day)
>3) The concept of a cohesive timeline was thrown out of the window with the introduction of the Pokémon multiverse: now it's going to become harded to define what's "canon" and what is not since it can be all handwaved away when contradictions appear
>4) Pokémon Masters seems to fill the niche already by offering *only* character fanservice (and why it could have only happened as a gacha game)

Ah yes, Mina, my favorite RBY character. Fighting her Fairy type gym was tough back in Gen 1. I'm glad they brought this classic character back.
