I think the main reason why this boss works so well comes down to how easy pokemon usually tends to be. This fight was probably the only time where you actually had to start thinking strategically instead of just relying type effectiveness like in the mainline games. The mons he starts with, Metang and Golem both use Protect and EQ in tandem but both have hard hitting STABs that fuck up any flying type or Misdreavus and probably put an end to your team so you can't brute force your way out of the fight with 6 sweepers like usual. It's probably then when I realized that Umbreon was the best mon in the campaign. Entei probably caught alot of people by surprise too especially since people thought that was the only time you could get him.
