A good part of fans wanted to games to actually grow and develop as a concept instead of stagnating. I thoroughly enjoy replaying my favorite games still and enjoy a good romhack and fan game. I'd rather get both kinds of games with an emphasis on the new formula since it's been what 25 years of the same thing for mainline. The most enjoyable games have been GSC, Colosseum, XD, and BW/2. PLA is nothing but a good thing. PLA Is still turn based, it isn't entirely different, it's merely dared to accept it's not 1996 anymore. It's not a substitute, and we could debate it's evolving for the first time. I get that the Chris-Chan's are having a melty thinking they'll never get another classic game. We all know damn well TPCi is happy to cash in on nostalgia with remakes and rereleases of those games though. Literally grow up.
As a side note, Kirby is also finally getting it's first proper 3d title so these next few months are fulfilling some long held desires for me and I'm excited about playing games.
