Maybe it's just nostalgia bias, but I feel like the shipping community, especially the slash community, used to be of this mindset far more often than in recent times, where canonicity is seen as a badge that fandoms fight over. Back then it was usually a foregone conclusion who the main character would wind up with anyway, and there was no shame in being in the realm of fanfiction. I hope it's just me getting older but the world seems far uglier today in so many ways, that being one.
For what it's worth, I'll be doing the same with what I like regardless of outcome.
