She raised Vulpix from an egg and was put into high stress situations where she protected the egg/vulpix from harm, and was able to build a rapport with it that way. Something that happens all the time in fiction. You can accuse it of being cliche or boring, but it's not "bad writing".
You deserve to be insulted when you're going to act this insufferable while being the one clearly having trouble understanding a kid's cartoon.
