Raihan is the most acceptable choice since he haven't done anything outside jobbing to Leon. It will also open the storyline for Ash to train under Melony who never said to lost to Raihan and battling Gordie.

Do you think Pokemon is influenced by the writing of "Beyblade Burst" since both of them are animated by the same studio? Ash's current personality is almost like Valt & other burst protagonist while Beyblade Burst is the only Beyblade series where the protagonist loses his final battle like Ash.

Also it seem Beyblade Burst seem to have consistent good animation compare to Pokemon. It makes me wonder that OLM.inc priorities Beyblade over Pokemon.

I could see that if Lucario was one of the only players in the battle, but I don't think any time is going to be wasted on Lucario as an individual, considering he's one of 12 Pokemon who are involved in this fight.

Ash and Tokio are nothingburgers in this whole encounter, the real heavy hitters will be Cinderace and Arcanine. Gary will either upstage Goh and intensify their rivalry, or Goh will earn Gary's respect by hitting Articuno with the knock out. The other two boys are really just window dressing.

On PLA , your pokemon doesn't forget its move. Every move they learn are added to their own personal movepool. So you can swap your pokemon moveset anytime before the battle.

I have a feeling this is what Leon does with his Charizard.

I know it's not his goal, but it'd be nice to see Goh do some battles. He's in a weird place, being very experienced in fighting wild Pokemon, and having quite an arsenal of powerful Pokemon, but still relatively inexperienced against trainers. If we had regular battles of Goh, it'd be nice because there's a chance he might lose, which you don't really get with Ash this series.

Goh doesn’t care about battling. His strong Pokémon are a means to an end for him. He doesn’t see them the same way Ash sees them. They are just his buddies that just so happen to help him out from time to time.

The Paul talk yesterday made me wanna rewatch the Lake Acuity and league battles. Prepared Paul is a beast, even though I know it’s 4-0, I forget just how bad he stomped Ash. The league fight kinda bothered me in just how little Paul switched Pokemon, relative to the other. I guess it was to figure out Ash’s team, but it felt like a waste. Half of his team jobbed there, Drapion and Electivire were really the only ones to get KOs. Ninjask did okay though, relatively speaking. He actually forced Gliscor to switch out and still got some decent damage on Infernape.

His League team was to counter Ash’s because he knew that Ash would bring in the same Pokémon to get petty revenge. He just didn’t expect Ash to come as far along as he honestly did. I mean bar Infernape sweeping his team, Pikachu and Gliscor couldn’t even KO his Pokémon back in Lake Acuity.

Gliscor was inexperienced back then, and Paul actually was prepared for Pikachu and made a strategy solely for him it was pretty impressive

I doubt Raihan will be knocked out without fighting Ash first. Flint probably will have his spot taken and they can just add some other random character to fill up the last spot. And that’s assuming Paul even is in the Master Class.

It would be horribly disappointing if he isn't, given we've had foreshadowing of Ash and Paul battling in a 'Champion's league' since DP by Cynthia. The way I feel it could make sense is:

This then leaves it as:

Which leaves a lot more surprises in store and if the Masters 8 is structured like an actual Top 8 tournament then the first match would be Ash vs Paul then maybe Ash vs Cynthia or Lance and then Ash vs Leon.

I don't have an obsession with Ash losing, I'd just like to see the main character battle and be on the back foot. Since Ash is on the road to the top, I'd like to see Goh have some struggles. It's entertaining and satisfying to see the mc go up against their own limitations like that.

I can definitely see him being the last Hyper class opponent but I do think they probably have to challenge the lowest of the Masters 8 to qualify. I think an even better arrangement could be:

Infernape got three KOs, Buizel one, Pikachu one and Gliscor one.
Torterra and Staraptor didn't get one.

On Paul's side...
Drapion got three and Electivire got two.
Meanwhile Ninjask, Aggron, Gastrodon and Froslass got none.

That said, they pulled through by softening the rest of Ash' team. I cannot say the same about Torterra and Staraptor. Torterra got destroyed by Drapion almost instantly and Staraptor biggest moment was getting raped by Gastrodon and managing to escape by Close Combat'ing the ground.
Also, I didn't remember Drapion being such a fucking beast.

In terms of contributing in the full battle...
Infernape > Gliscor > Pikachu > Buizel >>> Staraptor >>>>>> Torterra

Paul's arc is done, but they always did have that line from Cynthia that said they'll battle again one day in the Champions League, so I'm excited to see what'll come from that, since this will presumably be it.
There's also some development left for him in fully becoming the "peaceful self" that Brandon wanted him to become, I don't believe he's fully there just because he lost to Ash at the league.

I wanted Ash to win, but not like this. Bea was destroying him in every aspect, he was fighting like a fucking idiot and still won. With the Gmax boost, and having taken way less damage than Lucario, Machamp was the only one who could have believably won here. To do Paul right, or at least respect him, would be to build up his presence as a rival again. Don'tjust have him battle Ash again and leave. Actually make him a threat to Ash's goals and establish him as a threat by defeating other harder opponents. Show how this affects Ash's strategy and build up the eventual battle with them. Also, it has to be 6v6 in my opinion if its going to be a Master Class battle. But, this is all fantasy and they'll probably just have him in 10 seconds fo an episode and leave.

What are the actual chances that Tobias returns? He is the strongest non-champion/frontier trainer the anime has seen (even stronger than Alain). So I think it would be even worse for the writers to completely ignore him which would just make his concept as an intentional barricade to Ash even more apparent. Maybe they can save him by having him be in the Master Class and giving him a character.

Almost zero. Like you said he is literally only known for being a cockblock to DP Ash and having a few legendaries, the only reason he'd show up is to satisfy the nerds who watched back then and are still mad about it. He isn't like other recurring characters where they either were actual characters that showed up multiple times/were main characters (Brock, Dawn etc) or are characters that were relevant a few episodes (Korrina, Volkner etc). He also doesn't have a game counterpart.

If they wanted to do that level of fan service, to the point they would be bringing back people who are basically COTDs, we probably would've seen a couple like AJ back during the lower ranks of PWC, or at least Harrison/Tyson.

Alain defeated an Elite Four in a battle. Tobias has not. Also technically Kukui beat the Kanto/Johto E4 just short of Lance in the games but given it's not said in the anime to my memory we can wave that aside.

We do not know this. Since we don't know Tobias' full team it's impossible to tell. But if we assume the rest is equally as strong then Alain would probably only make it as far as 3-6 or 4-6. Tobias literally went through all of Sinnoh with only his Darkrai until he met Ash. Seeing Ash and Alain were fairly similar in terms of skill, I don't think it's very close.

I get the desire to right the wrongs of the past, but if anything, the writers are probably thinking "we should never bring him up again and act like he never existed", if they even think about him at all.

There's just no reason to bring back characters with that kind of baggage attached unless there's no way for them to screw it up. Bringing back Dawn makes sense because she can market BDSP and she was a popular character. She doesn't even really need to do anything all that important to make a bunch of the long time viewer feel warm and fuzzy inside, just hearing her seiyuu say the catchphrase a few times and throw in some sakuga and you've satisfied a bunch of people.

With Tobias, the only reason people want him to return is so Ash can battle him again and "make up" for the DP League. He isn't known for his character or his seiyuu. He can't market BDSP, PLA or Gen 9 outside of maybe giving him some relevant mons (which you can do with any COTD). His name is reference to a real life person that maybe a few a hardcore competitive Pokemon players would recognize.

The other two trainers in the Top 4 are far weaker than Ash or Paul, given the finalist opponent couldn't even take out Darkrai. Ash and Paul are the absolute strongest trainers in Sinnoh and based on everything we saw there no one in the region is strong enough to take out Darkrai besides those 2, the E4, Cynthia and I'd imagine Palmer.

Mega Charizard was able to hold up decently enough against Primals, which have far higher level showings than Latios and outside of one particularly powerful Darkrai in the films we have no reason to think Tobias's Darkrai is anything special.

Here's a fact for you. Ash's Pikachu couldn't take down Flint's Infernape. We have no reason to believe the other Sinnoh E4 are much weaker than Flint so it's extremely doubtful Tobias could hope to defeat any of the Sinnoh E4 let alone Cynthia. You could maybe make the argument that Flint is far stronger than Malva but then I could point to Alain defeating Malva after fighting about a dozen Mega trainers beforehand (albeit with potions to heal up quickly, but potions aren't too effective in the anime IIRC) and then growing stronger afterwards over the course of XY&Z. We also have no reason to think the gap between Sinnoh's E4 and other regional E4s should be that large.

In short, Tobias is a joke beyond Darkrai and Latios and Ash's Pikachu taking down Latios alone indicates any competent E4 member would crush him.

Sceptile essentially defeated a full health Darkrai by itself and broke out of Dark Void thanks to its bond with Ash. Alain's starter is Charizard and they have a deep enough bond to Mega Evolve and maintain complete control unlike Korrina with Lucario initially. If they keep with the JN formula for Gen 9, there's honestly a fair number of fan servicey 'mons they can let Ash catch still. The ones I can think of:

Gen 1: Still lots of popular mons to shill like Machamp, Onix or Arcanine.
Gen 2: Houndour, Larvitar.
Gen 3: Maybe Bagon.
Gen 4: Can't think of many for him to catch but honestly they could bring back Gible and have him evolve.
Gen 5: So damn many options here. BW really was a waste. They skipped giving him a bunch of Pokemon in favor of starter shilling and they didn't even evolve them. Could bring a lot of them back, and if they wanted something new, Darumaka plus Zorua both always felt like Ashmons to me.
Gen 6: Skiddo and Honedge were both popular guesses for him early on during XY.
Gen 7: Grubbin if they're up for ever giving him another Electric mon. Wimpod makes so much sense as an Ashmon as well.
Gen 8: Grimmsnarl, Toxtricity and Centiskorch all feel like Ash mons to me. I would say Dracozolt too but he already has Dracovish.

But IMO they really blew their load early with Lucario because that was the one that was requested for years. Hard to have a capture that's as hyped up as him I think.

The series refines the artstyle as the show progresses. Look at XY and SM for a clear example of it. Early XY had Ash still looking very similar to BW Ash but about by episode 40ish they had refined the design to be more cool and sharper. Same with SM which has a glaring difference between early and end. Early SM designs were horrible but by the end point the designs had shifted enough to look actually pretty decent and Ash no longer looked mexican.

Honestly, each series is like 130 episodes or some shit, you could easily give attention to 8 or 9 new Ash mons and even the occasional return in that time frame if the writers actually budgeted out their time properly. Other anime can properly develop more characters in less than half that run of episodes.

That being said, I don't really disagree with you. No reason to believe the writers will ever change their ways so it's best they stick to what has worked in the past. 4-6 new members for Ash and bring in reserves occasionally.

Yup the battle scenes had "too much" 3D in them and literally action packed in shonen style which doesn't work in an anime for kids. And don't forget the shonen style "romantic" scenes which mostly came from Serena.

I guess this recent discussion proves that there is a direct relationship between liking XY and not liking SM. The more a person likes XY, the more they dislike SM. No parallel relationship seems to exist for any other series (for example, contrary to what Scott would claim, people who liked OS more aren't more likely to dislike AG or vice-versa since they largely shared the same core fanbase). Perhaps the closest would be the hate for BW, but that seemed to be a more universal thing than fans of a specific series hating it because they like another series.

Ratings are irrelevant when discussing what anime was more popular in Japan. It's essentially impossible to determine. BW getting higher ratings or XY getting higher ratings than XYZ or SM is reflective of the pattern that as a series starts it usually has higher ratings before progressively falling down.

It's not uncommon to see a person liking both XY and SM (indeed, many SMfags started watching the anime during XY), but the most vocal XYfags tend to hate SM. One thing to note is that not every Japanese person is on Twitter, and those that are skew older. The biggest fanbase of the show remains kids, and I doubt most of them have social media. Twitter likes may give an idea of reception among older fans but not necessarily the fanbase as a whole. Ultimately, numbers don't really matter and it's hard to say for sure which series is more popular overall. My hunch though is that, at least among internet-age viewers, XY was far better received than SM.

XY had its flaws but SM's writing flaws were probably worse overall. The one-base thing they did had potential but it ended up being wasted and the rest of Alola became underdeveloped. The way Hau lost in the League could have also been better.

Goddam, the Hau episode. I still remember how pissed off so many people were. About Ash winning. It takes some serious talent to make people mad about Ash winning, let me tell you that. It kinda soured the rest of the league for some people which is a shame, because I actually think there's a couple pretty good battles throughout (Guzma was the highlight for sure IMO).

Thing is, some of the elements of the Hau loss isn't even that bad. The false loss, the Z-Move dodge, mastering a move at the last second etc. None of them are actually bad ideas on their own, it's the way they put them together all at once, and how Hau was just dominating that battle basically the entire time until Rowlet practically one shots Decidueye with Brave Bird. I dunno wtf they were thinking there.

People always say Ash is too marketable to be ever changed, but how much of that is true? Pikachu seems to be the only real staple the anime needs. Children wouldn't suddenly stop loving pokémon because of a MC shift would they? It's not like a random jap kid has watched 20+ seasons of it like most of us have. And to some even younger ones, it would be their first contact with the anime, so the one we knew would be unknown to them.

It's clearly obvious that beyond the OS, every pokemon series starts better than its previous series ended (new series hype) before a general downwards trend to the finale. Then there's an overall downwards trend as the series loses popularity (which is an obvious result of pokemon getting less popular and people losing interest in an anime that fundamentally never changes its formula). I say this as an XY fan, XY did not do nearly enough to separate itself from the previous series, it didn't commit hard enough to anything that might've broken the trend. The best you can say is that it had the highest spike from its previous series. SM meanwhile bucks the trend in a *minor* way, staying statistically flat throughout its run time, a product most likely of its change to the formula, maybe artstyle.
The idea that SM and XY fans have any right to argue with each other when they're both just minor variations of the same trend that's been going on for decades is laughable. Just suck it up, we were each a minor variation on a mediocre children's cartoon. Why don't you advocate for the current series to do something you like instead.

Not the anon who asked you but I think I'd agree with this. Ash and Clemont's broship was great but the other relationships were underutilized. There was so much potential in a sisterly relationship between Serena and Bonnie but it was almost non-existent considering Serena barely interacted with anyone except for Ash.

Ash's character in XY was by far the most interesting depiction of Ash out of all of the iterations. Only parts that come close are DP Ash's rivalry with Paul and the effect on his character there(DP Ash besides this was a pretty flat and uninteresting character imo) and Ash's original character arc in OS

Different guy here. I like XY a lot, but I don't agree with this at all. It's fine to say you found him the most entertaining or the most likable, but "interesting"? It was nice to see Ash competent again, but XY Ash was one of the blander iterations IMO. The few episodes they took out to try to develop him all felt really forced and unnatural given how the rest of the series was treating him.

I've always felt the XY version of Ash was the writers trying to have their cake and eat it too- they want him to be this superstar action hero that's really competent with his battles, but also wanted him to have essentially a "lose confidence" arc where he can't sync up with Greninja and falls behind a greenhorn trainer because he got too careless. But the one time he loses to Shota is because he's distracted by not being able to master this completely new form of transforming nobody knows anything about, so it doesn't really come off as a flaw of Ash himself so much as just him not having mastered it yet. The entire series depicts him as hard working and close with his Pokemon, so they can't actually have an arc where he gets lazy or has a falling out with Greninja, because it doesn't fit the character established at all (and runs the risk of making him unlikable), so they just did the story anyway even though it doesn't really make sense.

I guess I'll give credit where it's due, in that XY actually made an attempt at a more serious arc for the Ash and some other characters. I agree DP really was the only other time they really tried that. But I've always felt Ash's arc in XY never actually made any sense when you stopped to think about it.

I fail to see what you're talking about here. It's a misunderstanding of the arc XY Ash went through and the dichotomy that the arc presented in contrast with how Ash was portrayed earlier in XY. It was not a " losing of confidence arc " or Ash just being sad he lost. Something like that is present pretty normally, hell, we saw one in JN and it was exceedingly forgettable. You mentioned another one in DP and again, it was distinctive from XY's since it had to do with Ash's ideals being challenged. No, the character arc in XY was one built off of Ash's obsession with power and his insecurities that came with not meeting that power and watching someone he saw as a student surpass him. It's less about Ash being careless and more about why he was careless and again, what's interesting about this portrayal is that it's a reflection on the battle/power obsessed version this Ash could be at his worst and how it can teeter into Ash forgetting his own Pokemon's feelings. Sort of unrelated, but interestingly, in this sense, I think the argument that some XY fans make after this is one that justifies Ash losing to Alain at the end of the Kalos League when you follow the thematic through line there

The problem I have with it is that none of this is depicted that well at all. The one time Ash lost to Shota, it wasn't because he was deficient in his battle ability or he didn't train enough with his Pokemon or whatever, but simply because he couldn't activate a special transform that he didn't master yet. Nothing was actually wrong with Ash himself.

What exactly was it about Ash that was preventing him from syncing with Greninja before and after the Snowbelle episodes? Ash was a hard working guy and treated all his Pokemon well both before and after those episodes, and it's not like he ever had any troubles with Greninja. You're saying it's because he was obsessed with getting stronger, which true that that's always been part of his character, but him wanting to be stronger didn't change after the Snowbelle episodes either. Plus the one time he had perfect form Ash-Greninja appear before Snowbelle was during his mock battle with Diantha, where you'd think Ash would be the most fired up of any point in his life since he gets to battle a Champion (granted, it failed soon after).

Again, it comes off as the writers wanting to have their cake and eat it too. They want all these cool tentpole moments with Ash and Greninja but it didn't really seem like they plotting out the A to B to C logic of the plot arc that well at all.

This is a good topic worth discussing. If what anon said is true and that Lillie was at the school for such a long time, I do agree it’s a bit retarded to say she was never given the same opportunity to bond with her friends’ Pokémon as she did with Shiron. I also remember in one of the earlier episodes it was established that Mallow and Lillie were good friends and would often hang out after school together at Lillie’s house. Doesn’t make much sense that Lillie would be scared of Mallow’s Bounsweet even after all that.

I think the Lillie stuff overall was handled messily but I don’t think her conveniently only being able to touch Shiron, even if it was pretty early in the series, can be classified as bad writing. Maybe just badly paced.

Like with a lot of other fears, the more you face it, the less you are actually scared of it. After Vulpix she was progressively getting better at interacting with Pokemon. It took a bit of work but she was able to overcome her fear of Pikachu as well. Then later in the series when her trauma is revisited she is suddenly unable to touch Pokemon again. Note that I don't actually believe they planned that part out, they probably made that up as they went along and fit it as logically as they could, but none of this is actually that hard to understand or contradictory.

...All of which, if you understand simple context clues, are suggested that before they told Lillie to try taking care of an egg to address this specific problem, Lillie didn't really participate in most, if not all of them, and even when she did, she went to cower in the corner anytime she needed to touch a Pokemon.

Maybe it's far-fetched but it's really not out of the realm of possibility for her to have just avoided interacting with her friends' Pokemon for several months, or just couldn't really make any progress. Taking Shiron's egg home is notably different from going to Mallow's house and trying to touch Bounsweet once in a while or whatever.

At the end of the day it was meant as a silly, light-hearted story bit (at least early on). You can certainly nitpick how improbable it is but I'd probably ask how you accept close to half the stuff that happens in the show on a pretty regular basis.

All the sm kids had retarded stories besides Sophocles who ironically got the most development out of all of them. Kiawe beat Olivia before the series started but for some reason still needs to be tested by her occasionally in his quest to be Kahuna. Lillie touching Pokémon was handled poorely. The writers dropped mallow for Lana about 20 episodes into the show so she got bread crumbs and a shock value episode that added nothing to her character. And Lana was given so much yet still accomplished very little and her last big moment was getting abused by Guzma in the League when her goal was to make big bubbles that can help her travel the ocean.

Sophocles is the only that made it out of that shitty ass school with even a bit of progress

And the other members should be the champions from other regions: Diantha (Kalos), Steven (Hoenn) And Alder (Unova).

*I considered Giovanni could be in this group too, but it would be too risky for him to be discovered as leader of Team Rocket.
