Personally i think that separating special stat was a mistake. It doomed great pokemon such as uhhh, lapras, slowbro, special gyarados, chansey and alakazam, while making pokemon like snorlax extremly hard to play against. It didn't even help shitmons at all and started a powercreep in gen 2 and 3.
