I know I'm going to get shit for saying this, but doubles is what I think the highest aptitude of battling is right now. Pokemon's official videogame championship league (VGC) is done through double battles, so even GF and tPCi endorses it more than singles.
Things like redirection moves and abilities that ignore it, Friend Guard, Helping Hand, and Decorate were made for doubles and has no use in singles. Concepts like room hitting moves vs double target, ally interactions, and advanced combos only matter in doubles yet are heavily involved with the mechanical depth of the game.
Combos are different. There are tons more combo options like with trick room, weather, and setups making a bigger impact. It's harder to set up and/or keep your previously set up Pokemon alive when there are 2 enemies gunning you down. You need to commit more to setups, but also you are able to be creative more. Team synergy factors in so much more. Protect, Fake Out, and other such moves are that much more valuable.
It sounds like a meme, but I do mean it when I say doubles is the big brain format of Pokemon. It requires more thought play-by-play as well as more effort in team composition, ans it's clear that it's a huge design focus. It is a shame they don't use it more in game.
I'm actually trying to learn how to play singles since we VGC dont ever touch shit like entry hazards.
