There probably should be a middle group of, I guess you could even say "casual pokemon competitors" who say 'why can't you be both?'
That would make a lot of sense for some gym leaders who, from what we've seen, actually tend to have jobs besides gym battling, and indeed, being a gym leader seems to almost be nearly an advocation and it was how they worked with and applied their skills in pokemon to their main job that earned them gym leader status in their community.
