They should've retired him as protagonist on two occasions (end of OS and DP), yet they chose to have him stick around for 25 years and keep rebooting his character. Retiring Ash is a far better compromise than having another Best Wishes scenario.

It also makes the struggle for said characters much more believable and interesting when they're new trainers and not world champions. Replacing Ash with a loli MC is a net positive in my eyes.
