Nintendo really dropped the ball when it can to the e reader. Imagine a 3rd Pokémon tcg game where you could add your irl cards into your in game deck via the reader. Then you could battle irl a lot more conveniently than having to have a table, dice, markers etc. Card games aren't really playable on something like public transportation.
