Dark Cave has two exclusive Pokemon
The actual GSC answer is this patch of grass that is gated off by a Cut tree for literally no reason (it has nothing exclusive; Chansey can be found here, but it can be found in the route to the south as well).

Dark Cave is cool as it has 3 Johtomons hidden in it.

But I will say, if this NPC mail was actually a real clue, I.E. there was a real rare award at the end, like one of the Kanto starters or maybe one of the fossilmons, this would have been turbo giga soul and Dark Cave would be one of the best locations in the whole game. A bit of a missed opportunity unfortunately.

This cave is Kino tho, it’s the best place to grind for EXP in the mid-game. Also having a cave that connects multiple locations together is cool

Honestly, I look at screenshots of these hidden areas in these old games and it really reminds me just how good RBY and GSC were as video games. Never mind as part of the Pokemon franchise, just as actual kino vidya. It's crazy to see how soulless things have gotten since.

Needing to come back later to explore more of a given area is definitely Kino and johto does it really well. Mt Mortor for example is big enough that it’s like 3 optional mini dungeons. First time you go through you only have to explore a small linear path to get through, but can explore much further back for some good items. Then when you get surf you can access the hidden middle entrances and explore the basement section for more items. Then, when you get waterfall, you can come back again to explore the upper section and a part of the lower ones, with the final reward being a Tyrogue egg for defeating the karate king. It’s pure Kino and makes the areas much more memorable as a whole, never understand why some people act like this is bad game design

Come to think of it, pretty much every game requires you to have at least 1 badge before Zubat appears, but most of them after 3+ badges in.

GSC and HGSS are the only games to give you Zubat with 0 badges.

I have a fun story with this one - my friend discovered this during the summer holidays, and he literally ran straight to my house, knocked on the door a million times like it was a fucking emergency, and when I opened up he said:

>ANON! I've found a rare Pokemon! I don't know what it is because I have too many Pokemon in my party, so I need to leave the cave and go to the Pokemon centre - we need to memorize the route together as I leave the cave so that we can retrace our steps when I go back later

We still got lost but we worked on it together and found our way back, and I picked up my own Tyrogue in my Silver game too. Good times.

Same, dungeons literally used to be like, the bulk of the exploration, collectively taking up more map space than the entire overworld. Now there’s rarely any more than like 2-3 and they’re generic, uninspired forests and caves with no puzzles or bosses or major rewards at the end, just fucking nothing

Every day of the week there's a specific npc at a specific place in johto that hands out items.

The opponent that you face in the trainer house in veridian changes from cal to whoever sent you a mystery gift last. This means you can legitimately face against gold/krys with a competitive level 100 6 mon team which gives out xp, money and helps filll the pokedex.

Abuse the phone system while your at it. They revamped it for crystal and added additional battles to all trainers to expand their teams after certain events in game transpire. More of them give out rare rewards after there 4 encounter

Nintendo really dropped the ball when it can to the e reader. Imagine a 3rd Pokémon tcg game where you could add your irl cards into your in game deck via the reader. Then you could battle irl a lot more conveniently than having to have a table, dice, markers etc. Card games aren't really playable on something like public transportation.

You can try her pokespe manga team, or construct with starters + gift mons just like reds team so meganium/typhlosion/feraligator/togetic/umbreon/sudowoodo. Other gift pokemon that can be thrown in are mystery egg evos (magmar, jynx, electabuzz, wigglytuff, clefable, raichu), kenya the fearow, shuckie the shuckle, hitmontop, and a dragonite with extreme speed.
