When I was a kid growing up I would either look up pokedex catalogs or online sprite lists to see which pokemon I liked the most and would want to use. I remember when I was 12 years old I chose Pearl over Diamond because pokemon sites who got data from the Gen 4 japanese release said that it was the only way to get Shieldon.
