The early series focuses A LOT on this. Kanto was supposed to be what a highly urbanized region of the Pokemon world looks like and it is still leagues below the type of urban sprawl the real world causes. Decentralized small towns, urbanized cities that in all materials, games, anime, or manga seem to just decidedly end at a certain point with no gradual decentralization of skyscrapers into industrials sectors into town into the possibility for more town and industry and skyscrapers, just a set end border between a town and nature, instead of two towns. And pretty consistently the towns, cities, or people with the biggest focus on urbanization or industrialization are punished in the series for their ways. Going back to Kanto, while it is infinitely more gracious to nature than our real world, it's still intended in the early points of the series to be the peak of urbanization, and as such, it is famously the most poison filled region with the most Pokemon centered around the theme of pollution from Muk to Koffing to Porygon man's encroachment on nature is a major theme of Kanto. But what about it's neighbor Johto? Johto is a rural area and literally like half of the johto Pokedex are depicted as being happy as a clam. With the disgruntled Murkrow and Houndour being exclusive to the polluted Kanto.
