They make the player's life easier in both saving time with the slight to significantly accelerated Pokedex completion and providing battle-ready Pokemon to play Tower/multiplayer, and creating value in owning previous titles and continuity in allowing prior Pokemon to enjoy a newer games toys. And funny enough they can honest to God uptick your perception of weaker titles; trying playing D/P without the promise of a hoard of past Pokemon joining you at the end. They don't necessarily crowed out Pokemon you catch in the newer games either because those are already at the forefront in your mind, be they new or existing ones you've never used in the past. They make it harder for Game Freak to sell older Pokemon back to you, which may well be a part of the reason SWiSH have turned out the way they did, but they're a net benefit to players.
