Misty's stated goal in the series was to be the greatest master of water pokemon. It's vague, just like Ash's goal to become a pokemon master in the broader sense.
So that means she and Ash share virtually the same "real" goal. That lends credibility to the idea of her just fucking off with Ash because they both chase the same ideal of being a master, the difference being Misty wants to be a specialist and Ash wants to be a general practitioner.
And like anon said, her dream is to be like Lorelei of the Elite Four. This is actually lifted straight from the games. Coincidentally, she also has dialog in the games stating she wants to go on a journey to get stronger after training at her gym.
