The bit about how the explorers could see the degradation in the art of the city as they forgot how to create it, along with the shoggoths trying to replicate it in their own fashion. Wanting to but being incapable of understanding it and just making poor imitations of it. Also the concept of the star creatures waking up and returning home to find everything they ever knew was long perished.
