The "what we already knew" part means being the same person they were back then, when they failed to defeat Dark Matter. Mew was unable to accept Dark Matter due to his own shortcomings and felt guilty for it. So, to take responsibility he gave up his life to be reborn in the future, in the hopes that he'd be a better person in his next life. One that was truly capable of accepting Dark Matter.
So yeah, normally forgetting everything and having no experience would doom you to make the same mistakes again. But in this case it allowed Mew to start over from the beginning and take a different path through life, one that wouldn't lead him to fall short in the end.
