They wanted to make it easier since FRLG was supposed to be baby's first Pokemon game. That's also why they gave Charmander Metal Claw for Brock and added Teachy TV which wasn't there in the original RBY. That said, if they wanted to ACTUALLY make the game easier, they would've replaced Sabrina's Alakazam with Kadabra instead, but GameFreak is retarded like that.

It's not ugly. I don't like how they made the cave so maroon in HGSS and I would've preferred a grey layout like in FRLG, but I wouldn't call it ugly. What I don't understand is GameFreak nerfing the levels of wild Pokemon. If Level 60 Wobbuffets with Shadow Tag and exploding Electrodes were fine for FRLG players why wouldn't they be fine for HGSS players, especially given that FRLG were meant to be easy whereas HGSS weren't.
