Its the kids who are the backbone, more specifically its the parents who hear pokemon and who don't give two rattata shits about it that are the backbone of the series. Without them, even if they made the game's waifus able to suck you off with the force of a thousand suns, it would fail without those kids.
Face it, what does GF have to lose by pissing off its fans? One, two million copies not sold at the absolute WORSE while a more realistic answer is only 10,000-100,000 copies not being sold? Thats nothing to them, they don't give a shit and its time to move on.
