Abra is actually the only returning Pokémon found on this route from previous generations in the grass. Locked behind a trade evolution, Alakazam hits hard and fast with psychic moves and tutored elemental punches (its middle stage Kadabra does too though).
Skitty is a new and more rare encounter. It evolves via Moon Stone (find one in Meteor Falls!) into Delcatty. It's not the best Pokémon out there, but it at least like many normal types has a versatile TM selection, and I think you're VERY cool if you use this under chosen mon on your team! I actually did in Ruby version in one playthrough once. It also is one of only two new Pokémon lines in this game to get access to Assist (the other is actually Spinda).
There is another new Pokémon on this route, but it's likely leaking out of a cave that we should access after the first gym. Let's wait until then!
