>>51486218I'm not going to sit here and claim future games were all trash and that purists only play the first games. But there's a very good reason they're arguably the greatest in the series.
The original games were a passion project made by a kid who liked video games and catching bugs. The creatures he made reflected what he and his team wanted to make. The game being rough around the edges with off-beat sprites and janky mechanics only add to the cham. Playing through those games creates this feeling of earnest art that they have been chasing and failing to grasp for years.
But the truth is, they'll never capture that feeling again. And that's not to discredit those involved. Yes, Game Freak CAN create amazing Pokemon games. I'll even say they WILL create amazing pokemon games. But they'll NEVER create a game that hits the same notes as Red and Blue.
Because they're not a small group of newbies working on a project they love. They're a business, with standards and deadlines to meet, marketing to consider, and test groups to appease. It's not their fault. It's malicious intent. It's not even a lack of passion on their side. It's just... business.
