gens 6-7 when they realized you don't need an actually good rpg campaign with effort put into it outside a couple cutscenes when fans on social media will make mountains of fanart off the aesthetic character designs instead and praise it way more than anything remotely tied to the actual story narrative or game mechanics. there's also no subtlety with greninja at all. the pose, the scarf, the shurikens, it even has the word "ninja" in its name (and yes, the same applies to its japanese name, which is a pun on the koga-ryu school of ninjitsu). it's blatantly obvious what they were going for. chesnaught's knight theme is infinitely more subtle than greninja's ninja theme.

they're charging a higher price for the game than previous pokemon games.
they cut 60% of the series' namesake and promised that the rest of the game would be significantly improved to make up for it.

there seems to be this idea that the only path forward for pokemon is becoming a bland open-world skyrim clone. i disagree, because pokemon hasn't even come close to maxing out its potential as a traditional jrpg.
first and foremost, they need to experiment with the structure, setting and stories of the current games a lot more than they're currently willing to do. gen 7 had so many opportunities to break out of the tired old routine, but all they did was replace gyms with trials and call it a day.
they also need to stop the third versions and remakes. if they want to revisit old regions so badly, make a sequel. take the opportunity to fully update and expand them rather than just rehash them. while they're at it, they should revisit some of the regions from the spinoffs, like orre and almia.
fnally, if game freak is truly sick of making the games and they can't get the creative juices flowing again, they shouldn't hesitate to reach out to a studio like atlus or falcom to help. bringing in people from outside the franchise to give it a fresh look would go a long way towards revitalizing pokemon.
