having a creature fit in a small ball is a cute idea and definitely sells merch (also Tajiri praises the Adventure manga since it portraits on how he imagined the concept), but in 20 years the story of Pokemon has evolved into something much bigger, ancient wars, creating technology that enslaves creatures and makes them obey a master, different dimensions, etc.
At this point the depth of the world building goes like 3000 years back or something
